The
Village is situated 50 km east of Malaga and approximately 16 km from the coast with a population of about 3400 inhabitants. It is situated on the route of sun and wine. The municipalities included in this route are:
Competa, Algarrobo, Sayalonga, Canillas de Albaida, Torrox, Frigiliana and Nerja. The main agricultural product is the grape, and the wines of
Competa are some of the finest in the whole province. The village has retained it's original Moorish structure with the white fronted houses and an interesting contrast is the brick tower of the Parish Church of La Asuncion. There is also the nature reserve, a perfect example of the beauty of this region. This medium sized village is surrounded by delightful olive groves and almond blossoms, and a 4000 hectare wide wildlife reserve.
Competa itself boasts a host of entertainment: there are two swimming pools, a nightclub, local bodegas, riding stables, several craft boutiques and more than 30 bars and restaurants where you can taste the famous Vino de
Cómpeta, Sangria and a great variety of tapas.
Performances with contemporary and traditional music and dance acts take place frequently, and even more interesting are the spontaneous acts of local flamenco artists that thrill the audience with their voices and guitars.
This tranquil village provides the ideal place for those who are seeking a less stressful lifestyle in one of the best climates in Europe. The Sierras lie to the North and the wide expanse of the Mediterranean to the South.
Lying just a few kilometres to the left of
Competa, one finds the charming village of Canillas de Albaída, which is renowned for the incomparable beauty of it is Natural Park and the Islamic past that is still reflected in the structure of its streets and squares, as well as in the use of its terraces for cultivation.
Although only a small white village in the valley of the Río Cájula, Canillas de Albaída offers a wealth of culture and entertainment to all who visit her. From the majestic glory of the Ermita de San Antón, the famous 16th century church, to the relaxing camping area of "La Fabrica de la Luz" Canillas de Albaída provides an experience that will never be forgotten.
Spain is a place of music and dance, where the guitar provides the music for the flamenco and Sevillana, danced not just for the tourists in nightspots, but for sheer joy in cafes and bars. It is typical Spain, yet a place apart. Here there are bullfights and holy processions, caballeros on white horses and señoritas in mantillas. Here you will find sherry bodegas, tapas bars and throbbing discos, village markets and country fairs. This is the Spain of the tourist posters, but it is also Andalusia and nowhere in Spain is quite like it.
The area is immersed in the history of past civilizations. The visitor to
Competa will find the sights, sounds, colours and scents of its Arabic ancestry integrated into the everyday life of its inhabitants. The winding streets and traditional houses still reflect the influence of the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Moors. The people and their customs will enclose you in a magical world of beauty only to be found in this region of the Axarquia.
